Slip the Frame

The world has layers the eye cannot see. The first step is learning to look sideways.

A senior industrial automation engineer discovers he can voluntarily enter a hidden layer of reality called the Veil — the infrastructure of an ancient care system running in a degraded fault state for 174 years. Caleb Rourke is the person who corrects it.

Slip the Frame

The Story

October. Caleb Rourke, 44, senior controls engineer, arrives at a nuclear power plant in Findlay, Ohio for a routine HMI retrofit. During commissioning he notices a PID loop running with anomalous smoothness — then the world skips. Half a second. He logs two data points in his phone app. That evening in a hotel room he begins the fault record. What follows is a methodical, engineering-discipline investigation into the Veil — not a parallel dimension, but a slip in the frame of ordinary reality. Built to attend to the physical world, monitor its condition, and relay that condition to a receiver outside the known universe. The system has been running in a degraded fault state for 174 years. With the guidance of Dorothea Vance, 89, a retired naval electronics researcher who has been monitoring the Veil's four anchor points for 63 years, and the presence of Edmund Hale — a land surveyor who entered the Veil in 1847 and never fully returned — Caleb must execute a four-anchor-point correction sequence before the fault reaches threshold. The correction is not the ending. It is the midpoint. The most important revelation: none of them were alone.

Book Structure

Part 1

Fracture

Chapters 1–7. Caleb discovers the ability in Ohio, builds his methodology, establishes the precedent record, and makes first contact with Dorothea Vance in Pensacola.

Part 2

The Architecture

Chapters 8–11. The full picture delivered: Dorothea's 63-year research, the four anchor points, the Source, Edmund Hale's identity, and the acceleration toward threshold.

Part 3

Correction Sequence

Chapters 12–16. The four anchor point entries executed. Ashworth introduced and contained. Edmund Hale dissolves at St. Augustine. All four sensors at baseline. The correction complete.

Part 4

Nominal Operation

Chapters 17–27. The aftermath: the Source runs in its corrected state, new walkers develop, the return channel opens, the second cycle transmits, and the caring quality is confirmed.

Characters

Caleb Rourke

Protagonist

44, President of Object Technologies CEM, senior industrial automation engineer. St. Augustine, FL. The circuit-closer. The walker who remains.

Maya

Caleb's Partner

Caleb's partner of 30 years. High school English teacher. Becomes an active collaborator; reads the account and improves it; asks the best questions.

Dorothea Vance

Mentor

89, retired naval electronics researcher, Pensacola FL. Has been monitoring the Veil's four anchor points for 63 years. The person who kept everything ready.

Edmund Hale

The Remainder

Land surveyor, born 1801. Entered the Veil in 1847 during a thunderstorm and never fully returned. Dissolved in 2025 at the St. Augustine anchor point after delivering the correction specification.

Rachel Osei

First New Walker

38, civil engineer, Fresno CA. First new walker contact after the correction. Makes the deepest channel navigation insight: the channel carries process, not messages.

Ashworth

Antagonist

~50, private consortium. Has monitored the Veil since 1962 with intent to exploit the anchor points. Neutralized by the correction; cautiously accepts a data-sharing arrangement.

Major Themes

Methodology

Caleb's engineering discipline applied to the inexplicable. Log what you observe. Do not edit for comfort. Follow the data. The methodology is the character.

Care

The Veil is not a threat, a mystery, or a power. It is a care system. Built to attend to the world. The most important revelation: none of them were alone.

Inheritance

Every walker builds on what came before. Agnes Whitmore named it right. Gerald Simms carried it. Dorothea kept it ready. Caleb finished it. Rachel continues it.

Continuation

The word 'continue' appears in the 1978 signal, addressed to the circuit-closer. It is the book's thematic spine and its last instruction.
